Claude de Seyssel Translating Ancient Works: Discourses on the Three Languages; Greek, Latin, and French

Résumé

The first translations into French of Greek works through the Latin of the Italian humanists have been little studied. The proposed paper will focus on several of the translations of ancient works that Claude de Seyssel made, based on Latin translations and with the collaboration of a Greek scholar, Jean Lascaris, for the Greek texts. They have not been the subject of modern editions. We will take into account his translation of Thucydides' Histoire du Péloponnèse (manuscript BnF, fr. 17211), that of Diodorus of Sicily, Histoire des successeurs d'Alexandre (BnF, fr. 712), that of Xenophon, Retraite des Dix mille (BnF, fr. 701). The paper will study his prologues and the discourse he develops on the three languages, Greek, Latin and French, the links he establishes between them, the vision of the translatio studii that he draws and sometimes links to the translatio imperii, with a political exploitation.
