Version Number Attacks in RPL-based IoT Networks : State-of-the-Art and Future directions

Résumé

The Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) faces numerous challenges, including resource constraints and security threats. In particular, RPL-based environments are vulnerable to various attacks, such as version number attacks, due to the insufficient security measures in the original RPL protocol. Over recent years, extensive research has been dedicated to addressing and mitigating these attacks. Several detection methods and approaches have been proposed, utilizing techniques such as blockchain, machine learning, and intrusion detection algorithms. This paper focuses on version number attacks in RPL-based IoT networks, reviewing recent and relevant studies that discuss this type of attack, as well as the corresponding detection and mitigation frameworks. Furthermore, it aims to identify the challenges and outline future research directions.
