The transformations of social and residential habits of Chinese families in Thames Town, Shanghai

Résumé

Through the analysis of the daily life of the Chinese residents of the neighborhood of Thames Town, located in the new city of Songjiang in the suburban area of Shanghai, this paper aims at criticizing the simplistic idea of a one-sided Westernization of Chinese society. Indeed, even if the architecture of the area was inspired from different British styles and patterns, the residents who choose to settle in Thames Town are not necessarily looking to create a special connection with the West, neither trying imitate an imagined way of life nor integrating it into a wider cosmology. On the contrary, possessing a home in this kind of neighborhood makes sense on a social level. The British style house or apartment, used a mean of social distinction within the residents’ Chinese circles of interrelations, reveals rather their aspirations and new social logics.
