Animal welfare, human welfare. Putting one welfare in pig production into perspective

Human welfare and animal welfare and their environment are interdependent, leading to a new multidisciplinary scientific approach and the building of a global movement around these societal issues. In France, the RMT "One Welfare", a joint technology network, is working to put this concept into practice at the farm level. The ‘one welfare’ concept is systemic and holistic, and its analysis combines biological sciences such as ethology and zootechnics with human and social sciences such as ergonomics, psychology and sociology. Scientific recommendations regarding animal welfare have evolved, encompassing an animal's perception of its situation, satisfaction of its behavioural needs and its expectations. The same applies to work on livestock farms, where the health/welfare of farmers is considered through their perceptions of the work situation with their animals. Regarding the ergonomics of activities, the difference between what it means to work well and the reality of farming activities determines the health/welfare of farmers at work. Regarding pig farming, the housing of animals in alternative systems, group housing of pregnant sows, free-ranging sows in the farrowing unit and prohibiting castration of piglets without anaesthetics highlight the interdependence between human and animal well-being. One welfare can be seen as a lever for inter-disciplinary dialogue for research and development around a concept that is complex by nature, with the aim of jointly improving animal welfare and human welfare.
