Reclaiming Place from the Margins

Résumé

This chapter serves as an introduction to the book, setting out its key aim of revealing the progressive potential of place-based politics, demonstrating that fostering a positive territorial identity grounded in the co-construction of local policies is the best means of addressing feelings of remoteness that are commonly found in marginal areas. Rather than dismissing populist trends as ‘regressive and dangerous’, the book seeks to explore the progressive democratic potential of populism when it seeks to give expression to popular demands in a way that is pluralistic and inclusive. This chapter begins by conceptualising the notion of remoteness, understood as the idea that political power is experienced as remote from the vast majority of ordinary people. It then moves on to demonstrate how regressive forms of populism deny popular sovereignty, before outlining how positive place-based politics can foster progressive populist politics capable of bringing people together to common knowledge and practice to reclaim remote places from the margins and reconnect them to each other and to national politics.
