Towards Architectural Support for Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for ADHD: Modeling and Simulation of Daily Environmental Interactions for Mental Health Enhancement

We propose the virtualization of ADHD-specific daily interactions (including attentional focus and emotional phenomena) as an innovative approach to optimizing spaces for individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This research utilizes agent-based modeling to simulate interactions and environmental conditions, focusing on analyzing the impact of architectural space on the functioning of individuals with ADHD. The study incorporates the GIS and Agent-based Modeling Architecture (GAMA) platform and artificial intelligence techniques.
A key objective of this project is to develop a prototype behavioral schema for a computational agent with an applied attention model characteristic of ADHD, accounting for the three primary subtypes: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined presentation. The model aims to simulate how specific architectural solutions can support or hinder the daily functioning of individuals with ADHD in various contexts, including residential, occupational, and educational environments. The methodology integrates qualitative methods (semi-structured interviews, naturalistic observations) with quantitative approaches (standardized surveys, physiological measurements) and advanced spatial modeling techniques, including Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) and Space Syntax analysis. The ultimate goal is to develop evidence-based design guidelines for creating ADHD-friendly spaces adaptable to individual user needs. The anticipated research outcomes have the potential to significantly enhance the quality of life for individuals with ADHD through optimized architectural environments. Potential applications include personalized learning environments in schools, adaptable workspaces, and home designs that minimize distractions and support executive functioning. This project opens new avenues for interdisciplinary research, synergizing architecture, cognitive psychology, and adaptive technologies in the context of neurodevelopmental disorders, potentially informing future studies in neuroarchitecture and universal design.
