A perceptually-based method for vibration compression

During tactile explorations of objects, noisy vibrotactile signals convey precious information on the nature of the surface. This paper investigated human perception of broadband, stationary vibrations recorded from textures and reproduced using a vibrotactile actuator. Through a series of psychophysical experiments, we demonstrated that the perception of such vibrations can be explained by two descriptors: 1) the perceived intensity and 2) the balance between the low and high frequencies. This result has led to the development of a signal compression method based on these two parameters. The demonstration aims to show these findings by experiencing various compressed and original vibrations.
