Jews and Muslims in the Maghreb: Interactions, Representations, and Transformations

Abstract

This contribution outlines the evolution of Jewish-Muslim relations in the Maghreb across the entire 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The shared history of the two communities and their development during this period, in a space where the Ottoman Empire, French colonial authority, and Cherifian kingdom coexisted, is emblematic of the profound transformations experienced by indigenous populations. In the 19th century, these relations were part of the melting pot of Ottoman and colonial Maghrebi societies, where social categories remained compartmentalised and hierarchical. The French colonial conquest imposed colonial legal statuses which, by their very nature, were unequal and unstable, impacting religious communities and eventually leading to the separation of Jews and Muslims
