Robots at work: Stealing, creating and transforming labour in the digital age

Abstract

How do robotics and computing affect work? In this presentation, I will address three interconnected issues raised by machines at work. The first is that robots are stealing work from humans. The second is that they are creating jobs, and even new types of jobs. Finally, robots are transforming the way existing activities are carried out. To address these three issues, I will draw on examples from my fieldwork and consider objects that all have in common to be robotic and computer systems.
