In comparison with the “three canonical Vedas” which have many ritual works, Atharvaveda Śaunaka has only two sūtras, the Kauśikasūtra and the Vaitānasūtra, and a small number of texts of a commentary type. The Saṁskāraprayogaratna, here edited and translated for the first time, represents an effort of referring to a superior ritual tradition, in the ever quest of the Atharvavedins of creating their own tradition and of making it accepted. In the introduction, passages of the respective rites from the Kauśikasūtra, Dārila and Keśava and the two unpublished paddhatis (Ātharvaṇīya Paddhati and Daśakarmāṇi) are translated, most of them for the first time. For so many years it has been thought that the source of this prayoga is Gopinātha Dikṣita's Saṁskāraratnamālā. My work of editing was finished and the volume almost ready when I have discovered that the prayoga draws on Prayogaratna of the famous Rigvedin Nārāyana Bhā\d t\d ta, the southerner residing in Benares. This finding has changed substantially the content of my work. In 2008, I have obtained all the saṁskāraprayogas from the S.P. Gore Collection and compared their content. They are individual prayogas, whereas the Saṁṁskaraprayogaratna is a compendium based on these. However, the manuscript of the Saṁskaraprayogaratna is incomplete; it starts with the rite for the preparation of the pacificatory water (śāntyudakaviddhi) then the next folios are missing, and it breaks shortly after the beginning the godāna. I have consequently edited these missing portions from the respective individual prayogas of the Gore Collection and collated the other topical prayogas. Recently, Dr. Shilpa Sumant has undergone the study of these individual prayogas.Next, I have attempted to establish the authorship of the Saṁskaraprayogaratna (see chapter 1.3). Atharvaveda was introduced in the Deccan by 1730 from Gujarat, and the Gore clan had a very important contribution to its further development. This has led me to investigate upon the Gores of Sā\.nglī-Māhulī school and their relatives from Gwalior whom I have visited in 2012.
