Maximizing Safety in Cycling Networks through Optimal and Gradual Upgrading
Résumé
Transport networks are multi-modal by nature, organized by dominant modes of transport. Cycling networks, which support bicycles, electric scooters, and other micro-mobility vehicles, emphasize user-perceived safety, particularly in shared spaces with motorized traffic. This study introduces a safety weighting function for cycling network segments and applies graph theory metrics to assess overall connectivity and safety. These monotonic metrics are assumed to effectively represent various aspects of safety and comfort within cycling networks. Using these metrics, we aim to enhance safety in Grenoble’s cycling network by upgrading road segments from lower to higher safety categories. Additionally, the study identifies the metrics most sensitive to safety improvements at the segment level, offering valuable guidance for optimizing future infrastructure upgrades.
