First description of a dengue fever outbreak in an inland Guiana town: Maripasoula, France, February 2006
Première description d'une épidémie de dengue dans une commune de l'intérieur de la Guyane : Maripasoula, France, février 2006
Résumé
Introduction – A dengue-2 outbreak started in the whole West French Guiana district in November 2005. An investigation was performed in Maripasoula in February 2006. Its objectives were to confirm the outbreak, to set up an adapted response and to describe the arrival of dengue fever on the High Maroni.
Methods – The chosen methodology was the one validated by the « Cellule interrégionale d’épidémiologie Antilles-Guyane ». Definition criteria were used for suspected, probable and confirmed cases. The entomological part of the survey consisted in evaluating the importance of larval shelters, and quantiying vectors in homes.
Results – The survey concerned 528 people (13.9% of population). Among them, 127 were probable dengue fever cases, whereas the epidemiological surveillance system detected only 6 confirmed cases. The larva were found all over the town and Aedes aegypti were captured in 90.9% of homes. Discussion – The dengue-2 outbreak which occurred in French Guiana in 2006 began in the western part of the district. It is the first time that a dengue fever outbreak was described elsewhere than in the coastal area. This survey contributed to better describe vector populations as well.
