Although exceptional in many respects (the monumentalization of the tomb, the high number of dead it contained and their potential identification with the famous Sacred Band) the soldiers’ massgrave of Chaeronea is not an isolated case. It falls within the framework of a well-attested practice throughout the Greek world from the Archaic to the Hellenistic times: the collective burialof military casualtiesin a same gravefor practical, ideological and political reasons. In this essay, we will explore the motivations behind these specific funerary practices for those killed in action, before discussing the other archaeologically known examples of probable Greek military mass graves that can be compared to the tomb of Chaeronea.
