Surface Topography: An indicator for the Authentication of Painters’ artworks

Résumé

The aim of the analysis is to examine Van Gogh's paintings using fractal measurements, showing that authentic works exhibit a high fractal dimension (between 2.7 and 2.8). Specific cases, such as Sunset at Montmajour and The Ploughmen, are discussed to either confirm or reject their attribution to Van Gogh. This approach supports the conclusions of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam regarding the authenticity of certain works.
