How to measure the volume of a wine barrel ? From stereometry to the invention of the « épaleur », the rumble of the barrel volume measurement
Comment mesurer le volume d'une barrique de vin ? De la stéréométrie à l'invention de l'épaleur, la bataille de la mesure du volume de la barrique
Résumé
Coopering, an activity dating back more than two thousand years, is an integral part of the wood industry. Barrels, vats, and casks are mostly made of oak, whose varying qualities lead to production changes observed during the so-called 'épaling' periods, which involve measuring the volume to inform clients of the usable capacity of their containers. Measuring the volume has always interested professionals, from mathematicians who seek to predict to coopers who prefer to observe. This review aims to identify and qualify the various existing volume measurement methods
