Contrasting GIVE-causatives in French Sign Language (LSF) and French

Résumé

The comparison of French and LSF GIVE-causatives shows that grammaticalization of predicates like GIVE to causative markers is neither syntactically nor semantically uniform. The French and LSF GIVE-causatives differ in their syntax: while French GIVE-causatives with DP complements have the syntax of lexical "donner" (give), the GIVE-predicate in LSF GIVE-causatives differs from lexical GIVE in that it is morphologically reduced and has rigid word-order. The French and LSF GIVE-causatives differ in their semantics: while the French GIVE-causatives are limited to emotions and feelings, the LSF construction allows a wider range of predicates of internally caused change.
