Résumé

For many applications, optical instruments mounted on satellites must collect optical flux after scattering or reflection from the Earth, both of which partially polarize the light. However, some of these instruments are polarization sensitive and this uncontrolled partial polarization can affect the measured quantities. It is therefore necessary to be able to depolarize this light before it is measured, without losing energy or information. Several types of depolarizers are already used on optical payloads, but none is optimal. Here, we present a device based on an all-dielectric metasurface using anisotropic scatterers that is able to generate multiple polarization states, allowing a massive reduction of the integrated degree of polarization and thus the spatial depolarization of any incident linear polarization.
