Evaluations of the reliability, consistency and uniformity of speed and acceleration of autonomous vehicles. Results of various SAM project experiments

Évaluations de la fiabilité, de la consistance et de l'uniformité de la vitesse et de l'accélération des véhicules autonomes. Résultats de diverses expérimentations du projet SAM

Résumé

Autonomous vehicles are expected to become an integral part of urban transport networks, promising benefits like enhanced safety, improved traffic flow, energy efficiency, and reduced emissions. In this paper, we assess their performance from the travel time and speed reliability point of view. Based on data collected from the SAM (Safety and Acceptability of Autonomous Mobility) project we assess different reliability indicators. The SAM Project is a large-scale experimental initiative for autonomous mobility, launched in France in June 2019. It includes a large number of operational field tests covering six use cases for automated vehicles (autonomous driving, valet parking, ride-hailing services, new shared or collective mobility services, public transportation, and last-mile delivery) in diverse conditions and environments. Results show that autonomous vehicles maintain steady acceleration and consistent speeds, achieving reliable travel times on both highways and in dense urban areas, comparable to conventional vehicles. A pilot ride-hailing service on the Saclay Plateau further demonstrates competitive customer wait times, similar to traditional services like Uber in major cities.
