Résumé

The West depicted in the 20th century Western genre, be it movies or literature, has offered a compelling, romantic conception of a terrible reality. America’s history of conquest, expansion and settlement is profoundly influenced by the imaginary of the genre. The West of westerns has always been defined as the complex space of the Frontier (Turner) which helped forge the American identity. But the Frontier is not simply the meeting point between civilization and wilderness, it is also the configurative landscape for a national identity. A national identity which, according to Andrew Hickson, is founded on the principle of conflict with otherness. Otherness, in the western, is almost always embodied by the figure of the Indian. But in some more contemporary westerns and especially neo-western, the camera turns to a much more mediatized subject which is the figure of the Mexican and the new political, cultural and iconographic stakes of the Borderlands. Long before Donald Trump proposed to build his infamous wall in 2016, this Border-Frontier crystallized the mythical, political and historical tensions between both nations. How is the filmic treatment of the Mexican border affected by the legacy of the Frontier and Conquest ?
