Advanced 3D Electro-Thermal Modelling of a DC Superconducting Cable Exposed to Overcurrent Conditions

Modélisation Électro-Thermique 3D Avancée d’un Câble Supraconducteur en Courant Continu Soumis à des Conditions de Surintensité

Résumé

Since the early 2000s, over forty superconducting cables have been produced worldwide, either to meet the growing demand for electricity or to address density and space constraints in urban areas [1]. The simulation of superconducting cables has been explored multiple times, either through 2D calculations on the cable's cross-section, assuming uniform behavior along the cable's length, or via 3D finite element method (FEM) calculations. However, these 3D FEM simulations are relatively time-consuming, if not impossible, when attempting to model a cable with more than a dozen tapes, multiple layers, and substantial length in detail. In this presentation, an innovative 3D approach is presented to accurately model a cable’s behavior by detailing the electrical properties within each tape and layer of the superconducting cable, while also discretizing the magnetic and thermal properties in all three spatial dimensions. This is achieved using a static 3D analytical model to calculate the magnetic field distribution in space. Finally, the system is coupled to an equivalent electrical circuit model that includes all thermal and electrical resistances of the cable over its entire length. This new model enables the discussion of the influence of Jc inhomogeneity along the cable during overcurrent conditions, where the short-circuit current (Imax) is close to the critical current (Ic). Indeed, it is already known that for extreme overcurrent scenarios where Imax >> Ic, the transition occurs across the entire cable, and variations in Jc along the cable become significantly impactful primarily in cases of impedance short-circuits.
