On an Altar dedicated to Iuppiter Optimus Maximus Propulsator

Endrit Smaili

Résumé

Found in 2004 in Banjskë, Kosovo, that is in the lower part of Roman province of Moesia Superior, and published in 2011, the votive inscription presented here has not received the attention it deserves. Based on first-hand observations, the present article refutes previous developments and assumptions, and proposes both an integral study of the inscription, and a thesis on Iuppiter Optimus Maximus Propulsator. The latter, exclusively depicted in the altar of Banjskë among the written culture of the Roman Empire, is rather a struggle to give a clear-cut answer on his precise faculties. Nevertheless, relying on ontological analogies, the paper emphasizes that Propulsator is the Jupiter that repulses and averts danger and distress, most probably malicious, sanitary or military.
