The Eco-city: an Urban Manifestation of Ecophronesis in the Anthropocene
Résumé
This paper explores the emergence of the eco-city as a transformative driven urban concept, rooted in socio-ecological development principles. The eco-city concept takes shape within the context of climate vulnerability affecting urban areas, positioning itself as a proactive response to social and environmental challenges. Presented as a contemporary and physical incarnation of 'ecophronesis' (Xiang, 2016), as it incorporates ecological wisdom into its planning, the eco-city aims to be 'eco-sustainable' by adopting resilient attitudes and practices in the age of the Anthropocene. One way of achieving this is by integrating technology, knowledge-based innovation, and nature-based solutions.
This communication delves into the challenges associated with creating eco-cities, highlighting sustainable dimensions, particularly in social and ecological aspects. By examining ongoing projects worldwide (Morocco, United Arab Emirates), it showcases tangible applications of eco-sustainable practices and solutions in urban planning and design. Through these international case studies, the aim is to showcase innovative measures directed towards environmental protection while enhancing social well-being. This communication contributes to the discourse on urban development, shedding light on the potential of eco-cities as ethical and resilient solutions in the face of contemporary environmental uncertainties.
