Violin and transculturation in a renewed display at the musée de la Musique, Paris

Résumé

The violin first appeared in Northern Italy in the 16th century and has since occupied a central place in the European classical repertoire and orchestra. In this context, it is strongly associated with a rich variety of expressive nuances, but also with an attributionnistic expertise and a highly specialized craftsmanship. Highly portable, many of these violins have also traveled the seas with European explorers and colonizers to most emerged lands of the world, for the past four centuries. Exceptionally rich in sound and musical potential for its simple, sturdy construction, the violin has been adopted into a wide range of musical styles and many cultures around the world. The instrument has also been progressively adapted by makers on every continent, while the silhouette of its soundbox, the design of its soundholes and the spiral scroll adorning its pegbox may still sometimes be recognized as organological features or decorative motifs. How can the diversity of this typology reflect its worldwide presence, and the diversity of its musical uses? As the museography of the galleries of the Musée de la Musique in Paris is currently being reworked in a less Eurocentric and more global perspective, this paper will discuss the ideas and challenges of renewing the vitrine dedicated to the violin in order to address the highly diasporic history of this instrument, and to engage the museum’s visitors in the complex processes of transculturation.
