Tribute to those who pay tribute
Résumé
his episode looks back at the origins of the game Alive, published by Lankhor in 1991 on the Amstrad CPC. Designed by two self-taught school pupils, Arnaud Laplace and the author, this adventure game was created at a time when there were no dedicated courses in game development. Inspired by science fiction works such as *New York 1997* and *Planet of the Apes*, the creators handled the entire design process themselves: writing, game design, programming, computer graphics and music. The text highlights the DIY nature of development at the time, based on self-taught assembly language skills acquired from specialist magazines and technical books. It also highlights the technical choices made to work around the machine’s limitations, notably the creation of a graphics editor, the development of an image compiler in assembly language to speed up display, and the implementation of an interface inspired by the Macintosh. Finally, it traces the journey that led, after nearly two years of work, to the game being presented to several publishers.
