Pour une première approche des principaux thèmes iconographiques de la numismatique
Résumé
Celtic coinage is extremely varied and is the main iconographic medium of the Iron Age. Celtic art displayed all its creativity and developed an abstraction that served as a source of inspiration for many contemporary artists, including the Surrealists. Behind this abundance of figurative art lies a multitude of representations, images and signs. The main problem is that the names of these symbols have never been standardised and vary depending on the source and the author. The purpose is to be able to isolate, identify and codify Celtic monetary images to help us understand them. From their statistical study and cartography (using Chronocarto), elements of logic and concordance could emerge that could help to unravel the meaning of certain messages, that have remain hidden until now. The aim is to establish a textual and, above all, graphic index of the attributes found on the coins: the interaction of these attributes is characteristic of each minting and conveys the propaganda of each issuing power. Here we will test the value of this approach on a few symbols.
