Why pole vaulting at 6.50 meters seems possible but remains improbable
Résumé
The aim of this paper is to investigate the plausibility of the speculated maximum performance of Mondo Duplantis (6.51 meters) using different methodologies informed by our data. First, we will assess the performance using the principle of conservation of mechanical energy. Second, we will use our dataset, particularly the take-off speed (TKs), which is the strongest predictor of performance, to estimate potential performance (Arampatzis et al., 1999; Cassirame et al., 2019; Frère et al., 2010). Finally, we will evaluate the maximum performance based on video analysis of previous world record jumps (6.22 m).
