The implications of developments in digital technologies still resonate - forty years on - in the title of the exhibition curated by J.-F. Lyotard and T. Chaput at the Centre Pompidou in 1985. "Les Immatériaux" explores the impact of the technosciences on the emergence of a post-modern feeling. The term immateriality today evokes a dematerialisation made possible by technology. It contrasts with the materiality of reality, from which it would be possible to escape into new, virtual worlds. Yet dematerialisation proves illusory when we examine the material infrastructures needed to produce and construct these mixed, virtual, augmented or altered 'realities'. Re-examining the current and future im/materiality(ies) of digital objects is therefore a real challenge, if we are to envisage possible futures.

            <abstract xml:lang="fr">
