Workshop "Trial, Error, Failure" in bioarchaeology
Résumé
Trials, errors and failures are intrinsic to the construction of scientific knowledge. Yet they are rarely valued, communicated and published. This silence leads to a poor perception of research outside academia, which is seen as progressing only through major discoveries. In addition, the pressure to publish leads to a bias towards the selection of positive results, which are easier to highlight through engaging narratives. This selection creates reproducibility and generalization biases.
The aim of the workshop is to encourage reflection and discussion on the notions of trial, error and failure in our fields through thematic overviews and examples encountered by the participants. Based on these exchanges, we hope to be able to enrich everyone's practices by sharing experiences and thoughts on how to avoid errors, open up new directions through self-questioning and help to improve the visibility of trials, errors and failures in scientific publications.
