Désordre social et discours d'autorité dans Beowulf
Résumé
This article analyses the tension between order and disorder visible in the symbols and discourses of the society represented in the Old English poem Beowulf. After describing the fundamental principles on which the symbolic order of heroic society is based and how that order is threatened, it delineates some of the ways in which the characters wielding authority try to control the future through their use of speech, with special attention to the verb willan and to the expression of alternatives.
