Occupational Risk Prevention Facing Paradoxical Injunctions in Times of Pandemic Ethnography of a Rural Home Care Service

Résumé

This ethnographic survey, carried out in a small public home care service in a French rural environment, looks at work activity during the 2020 holiday season, following the second lockdown in France. This context emphasiseses difficulties in introducing occupational risk prevention in the homes of beneficiaries. As the home is both a workplace and a private space, home care takers have to deal with contradictory rules from both worlds. They are not in a position to enforce barrier gestures there, even though these are respected by beneficiaries in the public space. This contrast implies that home care workers have to work emotionally with their beneficiaries to apply rules that protect their own health as well as theirs. Faced with the risk of cross-contamination inside the home, they bear the double responsibility of protecting people who are reluctant or unable to comply with barrier gestures, and of coping with inappropriate formal rules. This results in an increase in psychosocial risks.
