Prokofiew und Meyerhold . Essay . SALZBURGER FESTSPIELE 2024
Résumé
Prokofiev’s opera was ultimately cancelled as the Revolution approached. He
continued working on it ten years later as the world faced the stock-market crash
and entered the Great Depression. He continued working on the score in the
1920s during visits to Stalin’s Russia, still collaborating with the permanently
challenging radical aesthetician and director Vsevolod Meyerhold to make a
densely packed, layered, explosive collage of different musics, literatures, bodies,
crises, and registers of acknowledged, unacknowledged and still suppressed
realities: elusive, illusive, violent, tender, overwhelming, and strangely hidden in
plain sight.
