Multi-Frame. Case Study Brief: France. Results overview
Résumé
MULTI-FRAME’s French case study consists in assessing two distinct multi-use scenarios in the Bay of Biscay. The study area covers the Atlantic Territorial Waters, Contiguous Zone and Exclusive Economic Zone of France. It is home to numerous and diverse activities such as fishing, aquaculture, sea salt harvesting, naval bases, shipyards, maritime transport, tourism, etc. It is one of the most important fishing grounds in France. The species targeted and techniques used are very diverse, but most boats are owned by small-scale fishers (about 80%). The Atlantic coast also plays a very important role in aquaculture, especially for oyster production. There are several aquaculture hotspots, among which the bays of Arcachon, Marennes-Oléron, Bourgneuf or Morbihan. These marine uses have historically shaped local communities' identities, landscapes, as well as rural areas and coastal cities located all along the Atlantic coast.
