Alternation between Middle Chinese p(h) and xw in word families
Résumé
This presentation introduces examples of word-family contacts between p(h)- and xw- words in Middle Chinese. Probable cognate forms in Tibeto-Burman and Austronesian languages argue that the fricatives evolved out of the stops. The facts are interpreted as evidence of a change from OC *p(h) to MC xw-.
