Photos of Ovshe Norzunov, Stored in the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography

Abstract

The article introduces into scientific circulation several of the first photographs of Central Tibet, taken by O. M. Norzunov in 1901, when the Central Tibet was closed to foreigners and photography was prohibited. Norzunov’s trip to Lhasa is associated with the famous Buddhist figure Aghvan Dorzhiev, who was a supporter of rapprochement between Tibet and the Russian Empire. Norzunov donated negatives to the Imperial Russian Geographical Society. In 1903 Russian Geographical Society prepared an album of 50 best photographs by O. M. Norzunov and G. Ts. Tsybikov. In 2021, three photos with Norzunov’s signatures and inscriptions were identified at the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography Peter the Great (Kunstkamera) of the RAS. These previously unpublished photographs are of considerable historical interest.
