Remy Charlip
Résumé
This paper explores how dancer and choreographer Remy Charlip used his dance performances as an inspiration to illustrate children’s picture books. Working along with John Cage and Merce Cunningham, he was involved in various artistic fields. He was a dancer, both an author and an illustrator of picture books, as well as a costume designer. His picture books were deeply influenced by dance and his choreographic process was stimulated by his design practices. His performances on stage were important sources of inspiration for his visual storytelling for children. Books were also used as “visual scores” to enhance his dance creations. In his artistic practice, both dance and picture books are attempts to translate a child’s energy and an exploration of spatial and graphic possibilities.
