Road-Side Units location optimization: a Mixed Integer Linear Program approach

Résumé

The development of Cooperative-Intelligent Transport Systems can only exist with a high investment in the installation and maintenance of infrastructure providing Infrastructure-to-Vehicle communication, such as Road-Side Units (RSUs). Thus, the problem of locating RSUs in the network is part of the Traffic Sensor Location Problem already widely explored in literature. In this study, we propose a new general method to answer it with an original formulation based on a Mixed Integer Linear Program. The objective is to obtain a speed profile for our network as close as possible to the (complete) reference profile with as few RSUs as possible. In order to validate our approach and achieve a Proof of Concept, we test our method with the M50 network of Dublin with a straightforward test case.
