Topologies of Judgement

Résumé

Focusing on the provisional quality of place, this text investigates the relation between place and judgement in approaches informed by Kant’s notion of sensus communis. Setting out from Hannah Arendt’s reading of Kant’s third Critique as a work of political philosophy, in which Arendt transposes sensus communis from the sphere of aesthetic to that of political judgement, it explores how reflective judgement relates to the formation of opposition through Reiner Schürmann’s critique of Arendt’s approach and with reference to Schürmann’s notion of an ‘anarchistic subject’. What Schürmann calls symbolic praxis is the attempt to displace Kant’s theory of the symbol away from the dichotomy between the transcendental and the empirical and towards the manifestation of non-empirical phenomena in appearance. Susan Meld Shell’s work on Kant’s notion of ‘indeterminate concept’ is then used to reformulate the ‘anarchistic subject’ and to assemble the elements for a topology of judgement that does not rely on proper place, but which creates place through a provisional practice of judging.
