Histoire(s) de l’art : autonomie d’une discipline ?

Résumé

‘Autonomy’ and ‘discipline’: two terms on which the debate was launched. The very fact of associating these two apparently antinomic notions was as much a challenge as it was an a priori insoluble paradox. Autonomy is synonymous with independence from the authority that discipline suggests. It is during the process of constituting the latter that common rules emerge and are established: in our case, those of a scholarly field identified as art history. What can we say, at the intersection of a self-given freedom, a proclaimed emancipation and a methodologically standardised space, to federate a field of science?
