Résumé

The paper is a descriptive narrative of the Indian expatriates in Qatar, covering two aspects. One dimension highlights the profile of the Qatari Indian community primarily in the white-collar occupations and the second dimension explores some of the differences of the group, in comparison with its counterpart in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The basis for the work is a two-month fieldwork done as part of doctoral research in late 2009 (15 days in Qatar and the rest in the UAE). The region of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) collectively has a significant population of Indians in its total size of foreign migrants. All the countries share the practice of importing labour, extensively from the 1970s since the discovery of oil and the rapid development in the region. However, it is relevant to understand that the individual member countries (namely Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, and United Arab Emirates) do not have the same typology with regard to the Indian-migrant group.
