Robespierre, monstre de cinéma, 1895-1945
Résumé
Amongst the historical figures of the French Revolution, Robespierre is one of the most widely depicted in movies until the 1945. Since cinema sets pictures in motion, it has the ability to synthesize the previous forms of art and to give a striking image of Robespierre. This representation of his persona is generally unflattering: movies usually highlight his tyrannical power, his responsibility in the condemnation of Danton, his fall and his death. As such, it was indeed difficult to show the bright side of Robespierre, that of a man who promoted Human Rights. However, this negative representation should not be interpreted as purely political. The cinematographic representation of Robespierre contributes in a decisive way to the representation, in the minds of the general public in the early 20th century, of the image of the French Revolution and to its heritage.
