Discrepancies between the perspective of climate sciences and those of small coastal communities in the Arctic: the case of Uummannaq, Greenland

Résumé

Do scientific results of climate science in the Arctic really match with local community knowledge and interest? To answer this question and contribute to the ongoing debate on the missing connections between community needs and science perspective, the present study brings closer two different qualitative and quantitative approaches: an anthropological research (participant observation fieldworks) in Uummannaq, Greenland, and a bibliometric analysis of the literature on sea ice, the central subject identified with the community. We collected community members’ perceptions of currently available science to determinate if they consider available scientific knowledge salient and if it covers issues they consider relevant and legitimate. It turns out that the available data about climate change in the Arctic does not provide adequate support to understand how what they value most, their main cultural and professional activities (hunting, fishing, traveling and camping), is being affected. This presentation supports the assumption that to be more useful for Inuit communities, research on coastal sea ice should be further developed, specifically research focused on sea ice thickness in the winter close to the shore. We recommend such research be connected to and co-constructed with local communities to ensure their needs and values are integrated into the research process and outputs.
