How does object shape the visual appearance of scene context?

Résumé

Numerous behavioral and neuroimaging studies have shown that the context of a scene is used to form predictions about the objects it contains. Context-based predictions would be particularly useful to disambiguate objects when the visual signal is noisy. This has been supported by neuroimaging studies showing that context-based predictions sharpen the cortical representation of degraded objects in visual areas. Our recent behavioral studies further showed that this is associated with increased perceived sharpness of blurred objects. Interestingly, recent neuroimaging studies suggested that object-based predictions can also sharpen the cortical representation of degraded scene context. The present study aimed to assess the perceptual correlated of this effect. We used a perceptual blur matching task in which participants (n=30) were simultaneously presented with two versions of the same image containing a main object in a blurred context and had to adjust the blur level of the context in the right scene to match it with the blur level of the context in the left one. We manipulated the information available from the object to generate predictions about the context. One of the two images contained an intact object allowing to form predictions about the context, while the object was phase-scrambled in the other image and was thus uninformative about the context. We found that when the two scene contexts had an objectively equal blur level, participants perceived scene contexts containing an intact object as sharper than scene contexts containing a scrambled one. This suggests that object-based predictions sharpen the perception of scene contextual information. Our finding supports recent neuroimaging data by showing that context and object processing mutually influence each other in shaping the visual appearance of complex scenes.
