Evolution of Firms Trajectories and Innovation: Knowledge Capital and Financial Opportunities

Résumé

The notion of trajectory became popular in the economics and management of innovation in the context of the development of the evolutionary theory of economic change. This chapter discusses the key evolutionary concepts of technological paradigms, trajectories and regimes. It studies the trajectory of firms and considers the key factors that change the trajectories of firms, particularly with respect to their technological choices and orientations. The capacity to innovate depends on the constitution and constant strengthening of knowledge capital which refers to the knowledge accumulated by one or more firms. The trajectories of firms are not only modified by the skills accumulated inside and outside the firm. Financial opportunities largely influence their strategic choices and the direction of technological change and form a determining factor in the evolutionary paths of companies.
