Influence of rhythmic background on handwriting in 2nd and 5th Graders

Résumé

Handwriting is a complex activity implying temporal and rhythmic organization (Nutt, 1917). This graphic movement may be influenced by the listening rhythmic auditory cues. Indeed, a rhythmic background induces a spontaneous synchronization to auditory stimuli that lead to movement stabilization (Dalla Bella et al., 2018). To date, the benefits of rhythm listening has not been specifically tested on handwriting, but musical background seems to improve handwriting speed and fluency (Veron-Delor et al., 2017). However, it is necessary to clarify whether this benefit is specifically related to the rhythmic cues provided by the music. To tackle this issue, the influence of different tempi when listening to the same melodious background would permit to confirm that pen movement synchronizes to the auditory rhythm. Importantly, it has been shown that writing synchronization to a beat is more variable in seven years old than in nine years old children (Bosga-Stork et al., 2016). This suggests that rhythmic background may influence handwriting differently depending on age group or expertise level. This highlights the necessity to study the influence of rhythmic background on handwriting across development. In this study, we recorded handwriting movement under different background conditions in two age groups. Forty seven 2nd Graders and 44 5th Graders had to copy six times three isolated words. Each participant repeated the same task under four sound conditions: silent, melodic without metronome, melodic with a slow metronome (1.6Hz) and melodic with a fast metronome (2.2 Hz). The four sessions were distributed on different days and the order of the condition was counterbalanced between children. In addition, the children realized a handwriting test and a spontaneous motor tempo task to investigate how these variables modulate the potential benefit of rhythm. Results are still under analyses.
