Research in multichannel retailing highlights the changing roles of the consumer and
the salesperson. In a phygital store, interaction with the technology can replace the interaction
with the salesperson. We mobilize the attachment theory and use a dual qualitative study with
20 consumers and 4 phygital experts. this research provides a better understanding of the
relationship between the consumer and the seller in a phygital context. The empirical study
reveals four vendor attachment situations characterized by different attitudes towards
interactive technology: attachment to the salesperson and the technology, indifference to the
salesperson and the technology, attachment to the salesperson (reluctance towards
technology) and reluctance towards the salesperson (attachment to the technology).
