Maize value chain analysis in Zambia

Résumé

The study forms part of the Value chain analysis for development project with a focus on maize in Zambia. It responds to the four framing questions asked to inform about stakes, challenges and potential areas of sustainable development support on this value chain (VC): 1) what is the contribution of the maize VC to economic growth in Zambia? 2) is this economic growth inclusive? 3) is the maize VC socially sustainable; and 4) is the maize VC environmentally sustainable? The Zambian maize VC has a long history of policy intervention and regulation as maize being the national staple food and the main crop of the country. The study provides quantitative data based on an accounting matrix as well as qualitative insights to support evidence-based decision making on investment strategies and policy dialogue to promote sustained and inclusive growth in the maize VC.
