“‘’Cause Not Enough Niggas Rap and Be Gay:” Redefining Black Queer Masculinities Through Intersectional Dynamics and Performativity in Contemporary Rap

Yannick M. Blec

Résumé

This paper addresses elements to be found in hip hop culture regarding the antinormative performativity of Black masculinity/-ies by African American LGBTQ+ rappers. It focuses on the emancipative catharsis at the center of much of hip hop culture. With the examples of the rappers Kevin Abstract, Lil Nas X and Franck Ocean, I explore the queer intersectional position of U.S. hip hop queer music and probe the LGBTQ+ dynamics that have come into the spotlight. Through their music videos, their onstage performances, and the very content of their lyrics, I analyze both form and message and attempt to assess their impact on viewers/audience. In this respect, the interpretation of YouTube “Reaction” videos is a precious measure of the reception of these messages by people of African American/Latinx descent. These performances and responses are addressed as phenomena, namely as objects reflecting the emancipative goals of the performers in their decisive relation to their audience.
