Virtual Reality for Second Language Acquisition and Cross Cultural Communication : setup and first results

Résumé

This presentation introduces the initial setup and progress of a 3-year study funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, investigating the effectiveness of Virtual Reality (VR) for second language acquisition and cross-cultural communication. Conducted at the National Institute of Technology in Hakodate, the study focuses on two primary goals: 1. Observing and documenting iconicity: Analyzing the vocabulary used by second-language speakers in VR environments to identify iconic gestures and expressions for meaning conveyance. 2. Measuring the impact of VR language learning: Assessing the impact of VR on learning outcomes compared to traditional methods, focusing on anxiety reduction and development of interpersonal and intercultural skills. The research builds upon existing findings supporting the benefits of VR for language learning, including improved cognitive outcomes and reduced anxiety. The study utilizes Oculus Quest 2 headsets due to their six degrees of freedom, affordability, and software ecosystem. However, the mandatory Facebook login requirement presents a privacy and data usage challenge.
