Virtual Ryugaku: offering cross-cultural communication opportunities to Junior High School Students through Virtual Reality
Virtual Ryugaku: fournir une opportunité de communication interculturelle aux collégiens grâce à l'utilisation de la réalité virtuelle
Résumé
In 2021, the researchers received a JSPS grant (Kaken) to explore the possibilities of measuring iconicity in VR in relation to language acquisition and cross-cultural communication.
Furthermore, in September of 2022, our college was awarded a grant to explore the possibilities of interaction between local communities, mainly primary and secondary school students and international students from our college. Combining these two projects, we have decided to conduct a cultural event on November 26th and December 10th, 2022. We introduce six junior high school students to virtual reality using Meta Quest 2 headsets at our school, followed by a cross-cultural exchange with an international student from our college using the BigScreen application. During the BigScreen session, Japanese students will interact with Malaysian students in virtual worlds using natural English conversation. The VR app allows students limited use of hand gestures and other multimodal interactions.
In this presentation, we will describe the preparation needed for this research and events, share the data from the qualitative survey, comment upon the results and analysis, and lay out steps we will take to engage in further research. We will also make recommendations for researchers who may be interested in using VR for language learning in their current contexts.
