Online processes and eye movements indicators during reading and writing: methodological considerations
Résumé
Dyslexia appears to be the most frequent manifestation of specific learning disorders, affecting 6 to 8% of the French population, impacting, both, reading and writing. We already know that dyslexia impacts oculomotor pattern during reading: children (Bucci et al. 2012; Taidi et al. 2016) as well as adults (Ficher et al. 1993; Hawelka et al. 2010) with dyslexia present a slower reading speed, longer fixation duration, etc.. But we lack studies about the impact of dyslexia on oculomotor pattern during writing and we want to link oculomotor data with on-line writing indicators (such as writing pauses).
This presentation focusses on the methodology process of an innovative project consisting in analyzing the impact of dyslexia on reading and writing processes in adulthood, allowing to capture, both, on line indicators and eye movements. The experimental protocol involves 1- an autobiographical questionnaire and reading and writing tests; 2- a reading task; 3- and a spontaneous written text production. Written data are collected using graphic tablets with Eye and Pen© software (Chesnet and Alamargot, 2005). This software supports recording both writing and eye movements. Eye movements are recorded by a non-invasive system using infrared cameras, hardware and software (Sierra-Neurovision™). For the written task, oculomotor indicators like staring point, the number and amplitude of saccades and the number and duration of fixations are recorded in real-time by Eye and Pen©.
